Using the link provided under Term 2 “Assignments” with the same name, look over the presentation:

1) Who won the War of 1812? Explain.

2) How did the War of 1812 foster feelings of nationalism?

1) The British and Natives won the War of 1812. The Natives joined the British because they didnt want the Americans to gain more land. The British was able to win the war because the Americans were very unprepared. The British also captured Detroit while the Americans could not capture Canada. The Americans thought it would be easy to take control in Canada because the British were not defending it. The American navy was too young and were outnumbered by the British. British put up a blockade between the Chesapeake and Delaware Bays and throughout the war it only grew. The British burned the Capitol, the White House and other public bulidings.

2) The war of 1812 fostered feelings of Nationalism when the American flag was noticed flying over Fort McHenry after the war of 1812. The flag was noticed by Francis Scott Key. The flag inspired Francis to write the American Anthem, “The Star-Spangled Banner”. In 1815 a peace treaty was negotiated between the British and Americans in Ghent. The results were that the British and the Americans were now allies. Also America gained respect from other countries after the treaty.

Do you think the Missionaries were correct in their assessment of the First Nations Peoples in the New World? i.e. did they jump to conclusions about the First Nations?

I believe after reading the article that the missionaries jumped to conclusion about the natives right from the start. The missionaries came out and called the natives “barbarians”. The natives were not barbarian they had to live off of what they had. The natives lived off of what they farmed and hunted and not technology like the Europeans did.
